You are right that the bulb part does not grow large. Scallion like, yes, but very pungent. I grow them for green onions in the spring. plant the bulblets on the ends of the stalks in the summer/fall. No, you don't need to wait for the bulblets to start growing roots to plant them. But if you wait longer, the bulblets will get larger and you have a better start come spring. Yes, separate the clump of bulblets, but if you are only growing for spring green onion, you can plant every 3-4 inches. Remember, just like any onion, you can chop the young greens for your salads too. They seem to grow anywhere, except wet soils or shade.

Hi Carmellia. I had walking onions at the swap at your house last year, although there may have been others too. I don't do anything to plant mine. I let the bulblets fall whereever the fall. They grow on their own. I keep my patch down to a corner of my veggie garden, maybe 2 - 2 1/2 feet in diameter. I just pull out anything that grows outside of that area, and give the extra bulblets to anyone who would like to try them. I use them for green onions early in the season (sometimes you can even pull them while they are surrounded by snow). I also use them for cooking. And, you can try the little bulblets too.... cooked whole or sliced in soups, sauteed, and so on.

Joyce, I tell myself before every exchange that I am going to write down the details about everything I get - what plant it is, planting directions, and the name of who I got it from. I make the mistake of trusting my memory every time, and it has let me down every time.

I am so happy to have the onions. I have never had luck with either the table onions or the full size onions. But I don't see how I can fail with these. They are already almost full size. What's to go wrong? Thanks. Carmellia
