rose glow barberry problem

My rose glow barberrys look awful right now (I have 3 of them in a grouping). I have had this problem every year since I bought them. It looks like a worm has chewed on at least every leaf and some of my branches have no leaves on them at all. Does anyone else have this problem? I read in my shrub book for MN/WI that barberrys don't usually have problems unless stressed. How can they be stressed every year? So, I am thinking of replacing them with new barberrys but wonder if I would have the same problem; or would I be better off putting something else in the spot; or if I put them in a totally different spot would I have the same problem? I really want to keep that color as it looks terrific against my house. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks, Jodi

What kind of sun and type soil?
Mine are planted right up against the sidewalk in gravelly rocky junk soil. Growth is vigorous. If all else fails,do a "google" image search and sort thru all the responses to find some answers. Or, try on the Shrubs forum too. They are knowledgeable over there.

Pondy, they get alot of sun off and on all day. My soil is mostly sand with some amendments when planted but nothing since then. They are mulched. I never thought to use the shrub forum. I will try that. Thanks for your suggestions, Jodi
