consequences of cutting back tamarisk now...

I have a tamarisk growing near one of my perennial beds it is leaning over and threatening to crush some plants. Can I cut this branch? It's kind of a big one; about an inch in diameter. I think if I cut this branch the others (about 3 smaller ones) will spring back up a little..
