Melampodium 'showstar'
Last year I started some seeds that I collected from a garden in front of Woodbury's city hall. Since I don't know the name of the plant, I posted a picture here asking for help. No one was able to ID it then.
I visited the U's aboretum recently and saw the plant in front of the visitor center. The master gardener there told me its name - Melampodium.
I googled the name and found the variety I had was probably "showstar", because it is supposed to be easiest to gather seed from. It is a sun-loving, drought tolerant plant that blooms non-stop throughout the summer. I love its small, bright yellow flowers. However, I regret that I didn't save any seeds from last year.
Here is the plant I had last year - I put it in partial shade, so it didn't grow to its full potential. The 2 zinnias were transplanted else where later.
