Holding area for new perennials

I have my Bluestone order ready to go, I have a plan that requires quite a few new perennials, I want to get a lot of bang for my buck and if I order this fall, I can spread out my purchases, I will be spending like crazy in the spring and I can't do it all at one time. I was thinking that I could transplant my new (small) perennials from Bluestone in a small holding garden that is next to my garage (and therefore protected) for the winter and then plant them out in their new, less hospitable, home once they wake up in the spring, the area I want them for is a good spot, but maybe not for brand new plants to face their first winter. Does this sound like a good idea? Or should I just put them out? I have also considered repotting them into larger containers and sinking them into the holding garden for the winter, making them easier to move in the spring...any ideas?

Thanks in advance, Helen.
