Personally, I wouldn't risk moving a hibiscus anymore this year but if it's a move it or lose it situation...well give it a try. It's also getting a little late for iris, then again it depends on the winter we get. If they are treasured plants I probably wouldn't risk it. As for daylilies and coneflowers, if you can take a good chunk of soil with them you should be ok. As to whether or not iris can be out of the ground for a day or two...yes.

Iris are extremely tough plants. Last year when I moved my iris to a new bed one plant got lost among other plants in the bed. It had a clump of soil around the roots which must have protected them and we had good snow cover through the winter. I was surprised to see it bloom in the spring.

Also, think about how they are sold, bare rooted and dried up a bit. I have even had ones that I threw in the compost bin grow the next year and I just found a tiny piece that had been dropped on the ground near the corner of the garage growing on its own.

At a fall swap around this time a few years ago I got an assortment of bare root divided iris and all of them survived though some did not bloom the next spring.

There is lots of time yet for the roots to get established. Even if the foliage gets frosted the roots will continue to grow until the ground freezes. Adding mulch around the plants will help extend the time until the ground freezes.

Cut the foliage back so the energy goes into root production and keep the plants watered well until the ground freezes.

I recently moved two small hibiscus plants but am waiting until spring to move two others that are larger and more special...just in case.
