Starting a new landscape bed in fall

It is fall, but I would like to prepare a new bed now so that in the spring I will only have to plant. I'm a novice but have been reading a lot (not much experience as yet). My idea (and I need to know if it is a good one or not) is to sheet mulch (now in the fall) the large area that I will be planting next spring, right over the grass and weeds, with corrugated cardboard and then with some sort of mulch that will look nice (such as pine or hardwood). I am wondering if I can add a landscape fabric over the cardboard and before I add the mulch. Will the weeds/grass just grow back and be a menace within the fabric or will this stop their growth completely? I will admit to being a fairly lazy gardener and want as maintenance free landscape as I can possibly get. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
