Sending Peony's in the mail

Yes!! I finally have a DD who wants to garden! LOL! I have a question.

My DD lives near Pine City, she called me and was telling me she would like to plant some Peonies. I know she can go out and buy some. BUT I have a large stand of white peony's that were here (NW MN) when we bought the house in 1993. I also have a pink one I rescued from a neighboring farmstead about 10 years ago.

I have never really done anything with these, other than toss some compost on them once in a while.

I am wondering if I can dig some out and send them to her in the mail? IF so, what steps should I take to get them ready?

I've never sent peony roots, but I've received bare root peony roots from mail order sources. They've been shipped in moist (not soggy) wood shavings in a loosely closed plastic bag. This was packed in a box with shredded newspaper around the bag. They usually have 3-5 eyes and the roots have been trimmed to about 6-8 inches. I've ordered several times and all have grown well, so I'm assuming that's a good way of shipping. From what I've read in planting instructions they should be mulched the first winter, but be sure to pull the mulch off by mid to late March. Hope this helps.
