I think it's persicaria, possibly painter's palette, though heronswood lists that one as zone 5. Someone else may know for sure.

I believe that would be it. Not grown for the flowers, LOL.

Mine was eaten and dug up this spring by critters - pic below are seedlings from original planted last year. Seems to easily reseed. Found a seedling about 10-15 feet away. Maybe it was carried there by ants.

Plan to watch next year and see how aggressive it spreads thru seed.

Agreed. Persicaria Painter's Palette. I brought some to the swap last weekend. It's a cool plant, as Rick says, grown for the foliage. However it does get a very dainty spike of the teeniest red "flowers" on it.

It spreads, but is very easy to pull out of spots you don't want it to be. This is my second year with it. It seems to do pretty good in Zone 4.
