Moon music

As we wend our way through January here in the Frozen North, my favorite passtime is dreaming of next year's garden. One thing I've been tossing around is a list of appropriate music to play in a moon garden. Here's what I've got so far:

Moon River (Henry Mancini)

Blue Moon (The Marcels)
(There are several songs by this name;
I'm referring to the Doo Wop classic that goes like this)
Blue Moon
You saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Moondance (Van Morrison)

Blue Moon of Kentucky (Bill Monroe)

What else can you think of?
Cindy

I love to play Andrea Boccelli at night while I sit in my wooden swing and enjoy the evening visitors (moths, bats, sometimes skunks--yikes!) I also love Indian ragas and guitar music. Still love Van Morrison too. My brugmansias are still hanging in there, and believe it or not, some hibiscus are in bloom. You wouldn't want to trade places with me in the blazing summer, however. Enjoy your white winter. Everyplace has its own charm, right?

RE: Moon music

My favorite moon music is made by burbling creeks, by peepers and crickets, by the sleepy babbling of ducks, and by the occasional owl hooting softly.

Sometimes I enjoy more bracing tunes -- like the singing of coyotes.

Mazzy Star. I don't believe they play any songs about the moon, per se, but they kind of sound like the moon would sound if the moon played music.

Oh, and let's not forget the B52's "There's a Moon in the Sky (It's Called the Moon)."

And to prepare oneself for the urban moon-garden world, there's nothing like a preliminary screening of Norman Jewison's "Moonstruck," featuring Cher and Nicholas Cage. The soundtrack to this stellar film features a song called "Mr. Moon."

From "In a Persian Garden," a song cycle with words selected from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (Fitsgerald's Translation) music composed by Liza Lehmann:
Ah, moon of my delight that knows no wane,
The moon of Heav'n is rising once again--
How oft here after rising shall she look
Through this same garden after me-- in vain.

And when thyself with shining Foot shall pass
Among the Guests Star-scatter'd on the Grass,
And in thy joyous Errand reach the Spot
Where I made one--turn down an empty glass!

From the poem, Moonlight, by Joseph von Eichendorff, English version by Edith Tillotson set to music by Robert Schumann:

It seem'd as if the heaven
Had laid on earth a kiss,
While slumb'ring 'mid moonlit flowers,
She seem'd to dream of bliss.

The breeze sigh'd o'er the meadows
"And thro' the wavering corn,
While humm'd the forest shadows,
And stars the night adorn.

My soul outspread her pinnions,
And thro' the tranquil air
Rang'd fancy's wide dominions
And sought her bright home there.

How wonderful: our resident coyotes are serenading the full moon!

RE: Moon music

One of my favorite songs. Here we go Dancing in the Moolight. Wheee.

Dancing In The Moonlight
( King Harvest )

We get it on most every night
When that old moon gets so big and bright
It's a supernatural delight
Everybody was dancin' in the moonlight

Everybody here is out of sight
They don't bark, and they don't bite
They keep things loose, they keep things light
Everybody was dancin' in the moonlight

Dancin' in the moonlight
Everybody's feelin' warm and right
It's such a fine and natural sight
Everybody's dancin' in the moonlight

We like our fun and we never fight
You can't dance and stay uptight
It's a supernatural delight
Everybody was dancin' in the moonlight

Dancin' in the moonlight
Everybody's feelin' warm and right
It's such a fine and natural sight
Everybody's dancin' in the moonlight

[break]

Everybody here is out of sight
They don't bark, and they don't bite
They keep things loose, they keep things light
Everybody was dancin' in the moonlight

Dancin' in the moonlight
Everybody's feelin' warm and right
It's such a fine and natural sight
Everybody's dancin' in the moonlight

Dancin' in the moonlight
Everybody's feelin' warm and right
It's such a fine and natural sight
Everybody's dancin' in the moonlight

Dancin' in the moonlight
Everybody's feelin' warm and right
It's such a fine and natural sight
Everybody's dancin' in the moonlight

Yes! definitely "Dancing in the Moonlight". That would make a great "our song" for the Moon Garden Forum---so carefree and full of celebration. Thanks for the memory.

RE: Moon music

Anyone remember Moon over Miami or Blue Moon of Kentucky? Whew, these are oldies.

 o
RE: Moon music

While I tend to agree with John D as far as enjoying the natural sounds, there are lots of "Moon" songs. Paper Moon, Bad Moon Rising - Creedence Clearwater Revival, Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd, Harvest Moon - Jason & the Scorchers, Moon over Marin - Dead Kennedys; I guess it depends on the mood you're looking for. And then there are zillions of night songs...Hard Day's Night - Beatles, After Midnight - Eric Clapton, etc.

RE: Moon music

'Claire de Lune' - Claude Debussy
The Chopin Nocturnes
'Eine kleine Nachtmusik' - Mozart

It's so obvious that these were all meant to be enjoyed at night with a glass of wine (or sparkling cider) in your hand ^_^.

RE: Moon music

How about that ancient one:
Katie, beautiful Katie,
You're the only o-o-o-o-o-one
that I adore

And when the moon shines
Over the cowshed
I'll be waiting for you at the k-k-k-k-kitchen door.

RE: Moon music

Enya has a cd called Shepard Moon that has some really beautiful songs on it. And Stevie Nicks always has lots of moon references in her songs! Gotta love her!

RE: Moon music

Cat Stevens' "Moon Shadow"

I'm being followed by a moon shadow, moon shadow, moon shadow....
Leapin and hoppin on a moon shadow....

Anyone remember that oldie?

 o
RE: Moon music

Ummmm...how about Moonlite sonata?

 o
RE: Moon music

Ooooo! Blue Moon by the Marcels is my all time favourite song!

Does anyone remember these oldies...Moonlight in Vermont, Moonlight Serenade - (Glen Miller), It's only a Paper Moon, Moonlight Gambler (Frankie Lane) Moon River - Andy Williams?

I'm late to this thread but that's me - a "Late" Bloomer! Pun intended! LOL!

Anne Murray, the pre-Alanis songstress supreme of Canada:

"We'll be shadows in the moonlight
Darling I'll meet you after midnight
(see how it rhymes? - now THAT's good songwriting!)
Hand in hand we'll go
Dancing through the milky way..."

Bethoven's Moonlight Sonata for me. It's so sad and sweet.

RE: Moon music

Hi,
I just love this thread. Brought back a lot of great memories for me. Hope ya'll don't mind I had to copy the whole thing into my moon garden folder.

How bout:

I see the moon the moon sees me.
Hiding behind the apple tree.

My grandpa used to sing it to me when I was little. Does anyone know any more of the words? Does anyone know who wrote/sang it or is it like a folk song?

 o
RE: Moon music

Catrina,

I did a Google search for your song lyrics, but didn't come up with an exact match. However, when I used just the first line, there were dozens of versions! I've included a link to a site that had several different ones.

Everyone,

Thanks for all the awesome songs! What a great list it is - and what a wonderful variety of songs represented here. I've had a lot of fun reading all your favorites.

RE: Moon music

Hi Cindy,
Thanks so much. I never dreamed you could look up lyrics just from the first line. So interesting to read the different versions. It's funny in version the moon was hideing behind the old oak tree and ours hid behind the apple tree. I wonder if grandpa changed it or if it was another version. Guess it just depends on where you live. The theme of the moon seeing the one you love who is far away was echoed in another string about using mirrors in the garden. Very interesting.

"I'd give the moon if it were mine to give"
-the Yardbirds, "For Your Love"

A thought: if you could do anything with the moon, anything at all, put it wherever you wanted, decorated it whichever way, what would you do with it?

I think I might sink it into the Atlantic for a wee little bit, just to see the ocean shine from the inside! Of course, my 'magical moon powers' would allow for the moon to actually shine after being plunked into the ocean.

What a silly morning!

Here are some CDs that have great music for the mood that you want:
Fairy Heart Magic
Fairy of the Woods
The Great Mother (Harp and Heartbeat)
Fairy Night Songs

"O you who listen by candlelight, you who whisper questions into the dark hollows of trees, you who follow the gypsy moon, here at last is the solace you seek."
