Datura Metel?? I think that is what I am looking for....

Ok, please someone help me. I really want this plant, just not too sure what it is or where to find it. I think it is called Datura Metel. It forms a bush about 4'X4', the flowers are long white trumpet shaped and come out at night until around noon the following day, and are supposed to be very fragrant. I believe this is a perennial in my area (z7, OK) and I am wondering if it is invasive. I have seen one many years ago that must have been over 5' tall and spread a good 15'. Just not sure if that was 1 plant or not. If anyone has any good information for me on this plant, please let me know. Thank you!!! :)

We have what is commonly called Sacred Datura in Southern California and I've seen it in a sidewalk plot in northwest Denver. I don't recall it having a fragrance. I hope this link works since it gives info on the "Fragrance of Datura".

Chase: Did you ever find your datura? If not, look on the seed exchange in the fall, there will be people there who have so many they can't give them all away (trust me!) I grew my first one last year and I must say it was perennial for me. It does get quite large. As for invasiveness, I found the root system on one of the plants that wintered over was gigantic, it was like an octopus! There were plants that popped up from those roots, but my guess is that seeds are really the invasive part of this plant, it produces a ton of them. Lisa

I got a Datura Metal "Black Currant Swirl" and it's the absolute queen of my moongarden. Lovely lovely! I understand that they grow quite easily from seed.

Datura metel, with the big white flowers, is not invasive, but the small-flowered purple datura is VERY invasive. I have not allowed the small-flowered purple datura to grow or flower in my garden for the last 5 years and I am STILL pulling out seedlings everywhere! Mike |
