seeds, moonflowers

I live in southeast GA, near the coast and bought some moonflower seeds. I've rarely had much luck with seeds in the past, but I'm trying again. Anyhow, on the package, the instructions were to "nick seeds and soak in warm water overnight." What does "nick" mean? I assume it means to cut them sort of. Am I correct? Also, would it be better for me to plant them in an oblong planter for now or to put them directly into the ground?
It's already HOT here; I've been swimming since April, if that makes any difference.
Also, do I plant them in full sun, partial shade, or what?
Thanks!

Hi,
I have never nicked the seeds before, but it does definitely speed things along to soak them until they swell before you plant them. I think planting in individual pots first is the best bet, but if you have porous soil and plenty of rain maybe you could seed them in the ground. I live in an area with only about six inches of soil over rock, so grew mine in huge pots after first sewing them in starter pots. Didn't plant any this year for some unknown reason. I guess my passion vines just sort of took over the space. Mine got morning sun and about two hours into the afternoon. Didn't bloom until late summer for me.

loves roses, I just took nail clippers and clipped a tiny part of the end of the seed. They say the shell of the seed is so hard and nicking them helps germination. hope this helps!

I scrape morning glory seeds along an emory board and soak them overnight. Works great. Should work for the moonflowers too.
