Help with a neglected Night Blooming Cirrus

Posted by wicketress Louisiana (My Page) on

Hi, I am a new member and after reading all the posts here I decided to join...I find the idea of having a moon garden very interesting. A friend of mine gave me a night blooming cirrus plant that is fairly large. This friend could not care for the plant properly because he works away from home 3 months at a time. I am familar with this type of plant although I have never owned nor cared for one. The plant he gave me has many brown leaves as well as some very healthy looking ones...I am sure it has been neglected for a while. I am wondering what can I do to properly care for it and get it back into better health. Any advice would be appreciated...Thanks!

clip back the dead leaves, and remember that this is a woodland cactus, so water it like you would your other plants. You'll see some improvement soon! Mine is in a mess right now, because apparently, it is delicious! Or so my cat thinks! >:o(

Thanks...I did what you suggested and almost instantly it looked better.... after a couple of days i have to say it definately improved...I have no idea if this particular plant has ever bloomed...is there anything I can do to help it along? Does it have a certain season it blooms...ie. summer or autumn...I cant wait to see if it blooms.

Just got back in town, and saw your post. Good for you! But I don't know about a pink bloom...are you sure it's the night bloomer? These have large wide strappy leaves.

thanks for replying...... it does have long strappy leaves and my friend called it a night bloomer...The little bud fell off two days after I posted that I had one....I researched it online and from the pictures I saw it looked the same... Now I am hoping it will develop more in the days to come....

I love these plants ! Mine's in a real state right now . It's so overgrown that it's leaning WAYYYYY over ! So getting it under control this week is at the top of my
"honey-do" list .
Good luck with yours !

RE: Help with a neglected Night Blooming Cirrus

I'm interested in any information on caring for my night blooming cirrus/cereus. How do I identify which species I have. I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and had flood. All my plants, including my night bloomer, were soaked with Katrina's waves. I've lost some, but was delighted with how many lived. My night bloomer has had 5-6 blooms three times since the hurricane. It hasn't grown much. I'm seeking information on fertilizer as well.
