Moonflower (vine) pinching/branching?

I didn't realize that this plant would branch until just a few days ago. The 50+ plants I have growing on a section of chainlink fencing have grown steadily upward, while 12 "back up" plants growing in separate pots have begun to twine around each other and... branch! I'm guessing that's because they have nothing to climb yet.

If I had known they'd do this, could I have pinched them after every 8 - 9 inches of growth and made them spread better? I know some plants with singular terminal buds die when the terminal is damaged and this is my first experience growing Moonflowers. The way things are going, I'm probably going to have a top-heavy fence very soon, but many have not yet reached the top. If I can pinch those, it will help some.

Thanks!
(I'll post this in the From Seed forum, too.)

In my opinion Ipomoea is one of the most vigorous vines. Mine climbs the 25 feet long 5 feet tall chain link fence and the fence
will be completely disappears in a few months. That being said, I personally have never found it necessary to help it along by pinching.
It's short internodes simply branch out on its own and form very full foliage I can hardly see the stem.

Today, the same fence is still standing and in good shape but the old achy back is a another story altogether. lol

Ok, I have one Moonflower that has grown from my seeds. It is like 7 feet tall! I haven't seen it bloom yet, gotta wake up at midnight and check it out! I noticed several of the pods were dark so I took the seeds out and have tons!! So, how do I preserve them? It is not a vine like my morning glories, though, it is growing straight up like a stalk. Do they do that?

Rebecca... who has never grown Moonflowers before so not sure what to expect.
