My favorite (lavender nicotiana)

I planted the tall (3'+) white nicotiana last spring. It was a let down. They appear dirty and didn't fill the air with scent like the shorter red and lavender ones. I also had far fewer hummer moths this year, which is one of the reasons I plant them. Any comments welcome to this novice. ~h~

This year was my first with nicotiana and I used the tall white kind. I liked it a lot but if the red and lavender short kinds are better I will give those a try next year. Thanks for sharing.

Has anybody grown Nicotiana sylvestris? I tried them this year but I accidentally killed them. I was wondering how they compared to other nicotianas and if I should try again next year.

Hi:
I grow the Nicotiana Sylvestris. I like it far more than any other merely for it's form. So stately in the garden! The scent is a knockout and lovely mixed with scented 4 O'clocks.
My only problem was this year I planted it too close to some small trees and they had to lean over a bit to grow. Definately back of the boarder next time! I found them extreemly drought tollerant.

I grew the Nicotiana Alata for the first time this year and the scent was heavenly wafting in the evening (esp. from the white flowers). I have sylvestis seeds and can't wait till next year to plant them but I also have saved seeds from this year's white flowers and will plant them again because they were so lovely.

I grew syvestris this year. My neighbor started them from seeds around april here in zone 4. She prinked them in a container, then thinned them. Out of hundreds that grew, she could only thin out so many! It grew well over my head (I'm 5'6". I had to stake them with a metal pole. Grew well in full sun and no care. Very drought tolerant! Just give these babies LOTS OF ROOM!. They grow wide and tall!
Loved em!

Try the green nicotiana langsdorffii for a special treat. Not much scent, but the flowers are so striking! A great addition to flower arrangements.

Does anyone know if Nicotania Rustica is scented?

Thank you,
