Fish

My neighbor claims when gardening to dig the hole, place a fish at the bottom, put dirt on top of the fish and then place the plant such as tomatoes on top of the two. He says that the fish acts as a fertilizer. His garden looks good. Is there any truth to his use of a fish like this? Thanks for your time.

Well, just off the cuff, fish emulsion is a great fertilizer and it is made from liquids pressed out of fish. So simply using plain ol' fish probably has value as fertilizer as well, though I'm sure it isn't as concentrated as fish emulsion.

Here is a link that might be useful: Organic Fertilizer Options from My Midwest Yard

Sounds pretty much like what some Native Americans did.

RE: Fish

Unless you catch your own, I suspect fish emulsion would be much cheaper too.
