White garden like Vita Sackville West at Sissinghurst

| I'd like to create a tiny version of a White Garden using Vita Sackville West's inspiration. I have a site that is 5 feet by 10 feet and gets about 5 or 6 hours of direct sun a day. The site will be seen from our patio and/or sunroom and is backed by a white barked birch tree. The tree is at the top of a ravine at least 10 feet behind the site. I would like suggestions of plants that might be attractive for as much of the season as possible and would compliment eachother. Flowers, or foilage should be white or gray. Please tell me what are your thoughts? Thank you in advance for anything you might suggest. |

Hi plant_nanny, oh dear where to start, the options are staggering. I think first of you need to share more of your thoughts about what you envision it to look like. Also, do you want interest all year, or do you want it to peak in a particular season? Consider the height of the planting, tall screen-like, low plantings to frame the birches, or a good mixture. As you can see, there are lot's of questions that need to be answered, but don't despair, almost every good garening book has a section about an all white garden. Maybe start by looking online (google, yahoo, etc.) and use those key words... it can be half the fun looking at other pictures. Good luck, plant_nanny! Marc |
