When to plant Papaver poppies?

Hi , I'm from California and am sending my friend some annual papaver plants in 4" pot size to friend in Chicago Zone 5 . Can you tell me when you folks usually plant your poppy seedlings ( not seeds) ? How late can you plant them without them bolting? Thanks much in advance!

Annie

RE: When to plant Papaver poppies?

Since it's a frost tender annual out here, I wouldn't plant it outside until the end of May. Or mid May at the soonest. But, if we have a late frost, your friend can cover the plant.
