Spinach Up!!!

| I planted Bloomsdale spinach seeds in a large pot on the patio on Feb. 22. With our up and down temps in the Chicago suburbs, I had no idea what to expect. I just checked this morning and I have loads of seeds sprouted. Maybe I'll have some early spinach...maybe not, but I figure that 50 cent packet of seed was worth a try!
I've also had my small crocuses blooming for about a week....
Anyone else want to brag????

Congrats! Where are you, Jean? I sowed a lot of stuffs last December. A lot of them sprouted then died when the cold snap hit. Right now I have several spring bulbs in bloom: -Snowdrops since November - some looking rather pathetic from the freeze -Dwarf Iris -Eranthis hyemalis -Eranthis cilicica -Leucojum vernum -Crocus Puschkinia, mini tulips and mini daffodils are about to bloom and I have tons of other bulbs growing. :-) I need to sow more annuals. Will do that before long. |

| Jean, I plant spinach every fall, and pretty much pick it all winter. The lettuce I planted with it has frozen, but every time we get some warn days, the spinach grows. right now it's under 9" of snow, but it will be there when it melts. The variety is Melody. |

| That's great that your spinach is up! Mine isn't, even though it's in a cold-frame I set up a few weeks ago. The radishes in there are up, though! I can't believe you guys have stuff blooming already! I'm really envious! Where I live (just east of Gary, almost on the lake), it's usually a little warmer than Chicago. My tulips are a little farther along than my boyfriend's, and he lives in Lombard. However, I only have little crocus sprouts, and I'm begining to worry about my daffodils. I planted them last November, very late and pretty deep. Only a few are poking up so far. So I'm seeing tulip leaves 5" tall, and just a few daffs poking out of the ground. This seems weird to me, but I guess I'm glad something is coming up. I think I'll go have a little talk with everyone about catching up to the Chicagoans and blooming! |
