I have a low-growing rosey pink yarrow , blue salvia, and hen and chicks. It's not the be-all, end-all, but everything is thriving, and I don't water it now that it is established. The rock is about a foot, foot and a half or so away from the post, which was essential. I didn't paint a bulls-eye, but a golden one just sort of showed up. Before that, nothing would survive there.

Yeah, I'm not looking for spectacular, just some color that I can put there that will last the summer that I can water with a can every couple of days. People have suggested clematis, but with what I'm doing elsewhere, I don't think a vine that I have to fuss with a lot is what's needed.

Maybe some kind of blooming native plant would work out well -- black-eyed susans, coneflowers, something like that. They're fairly common, but they're tough as nails and don't need much fussing-over once they're established.

Our mail carrier has serious allergies to bees and wasps, and has asked the neighborhood (very nicely) to avoid planting blooming things near the mailboxes. We'd like some decoration out there, though, so we're thinking of putting in a clump of native grass behind ours this year. (We're pretty fond of the big grasses!)

Hey, didn't think of that. I also like ornamental grasses...I'll have to look around.

Really not going for spectacular. I'm going to be doing some bareroots this spring and would rather 'fuss' over them than my mailbox. LOL
