Tinkerbelle Lilacs may be Dead!

I don't know what happened but I think my Tinkerbelle Lilacs are dead. They do not have Leaves or flowers. I have 2 of them and they are spaced about 6-7 feet apart, not even next to each other, but both of them look the same. They have little buds on them though along the stems. (I should send a picture) I was wondering if any one else has experienced this, this year. Last year they were both beautiful they are about 5-6 feet tall & about 3-4 years old. I know they don't bloom until after old fashioned lilacs but should they have leaves by now? Any suggestions?
