I'm not sure how they act where you are but in zone 4 they don't come up till early june at the earliest.They are known as slow to emerge which I'm sure others will also tell you. Mine (and I have a couple lord baltimore and several different disco belles) have not begun to come up yet either. Don't give up yet!

hi...lobelia self seeds and in that way acts as a perennial...there's a hybrid out with red stems that i'm not so sure about...i bought one last year and though i see the green stemmed lobelia rosettes popping up i don't know that any of them are the red :(...my lord baltimore is very slow to come up with no sign yet but i've had it for many years and it always has come back even bigger than the year before!...the thing to keep in mind with it is it definitely does better in an area of moist ground...

...for other reds...have you tried red alaskan poppies...they are earlier because they self seed but if you save some seeds and scatter them now you will get later blooms too...after they are done the pods are nice in bouquets and/or you can just pull the plants out to make room for whatever is coming next...leave one or two for next years seed crop...if you don't already have them you might like tall red phlox, dahlia, lupine, daylillies, roses or monarda for mid-late summer...there's a red penstamen that my sister loves...

My hibiscus have just sprouted in the last few days with the recent warm weather. I have one that is always late and makes you wonder.
I don't know how hardy fall planted hibiscus might be...perhaps they are not as well root established as spring planted ones.

Out of the three Crocosmias Lucifer I planted two years ago only one has survived. I did not mulch for the winter, just gave them lots of compost. Maybe the ones that didn't come back didn't like the site, maybe Zone 5 hardiness is not that reliable.

The one that comes back leafed out in April this year. I expect it to flower in early July - this is what it did in the past, not late summer as written in British gardening books.
