I got my trees from Millers Nursery in Canandaigua, NY. I liked the 1st Freedom & Liberty apple trees I got from them so much, I planted them again at this house. They are scab & disease resistant. The apples are not grainey but are a little on the tart side which I prefer. Mail order trees took off the 1st year & I had a few apples the 2nd. You're certainly not too late to plant. They are true dwarfs/ not semi dwarfs.

Most mail order nurseries ship bare root trees, and they probably won't ship this late in the season. Local nurseries should have potted trees that you could plant now. Check with your local UW extension office for sources in your area. They can also provide you with a couple of good publications from the Univ. of Wis. with information on growing apples in northern WI.

A few of the newer selections that you might want to taste test are Honeycrisp, Sweet 16 and Zesta(r).

Another approach is to locate someone experienced in grafting and have them graft a scion from your mom's tree onto a dwarf rootstock. It takes longer, but you would have the apple that you seem to like the most.

I'm bumping this up, because I am right back in the same spot as last year!! Anyone have a catalog where they might be selling these? Gurneys has Golden Delicious, but no one seems to have Jonathan. I don't have a clue as to why. Any advice always appreciated!

I found St. Lawrence Nursery in New York state to be quite good a few years ago. They had MANY types of apples as well as other fruit and nut trees.
