narrow planting area suggestions

I have a long, narrow area (roughly 2x14 ft) that runs along my front porch and as of now is filled with dirt, waiting for something to be planted in it, but I'm at a loss. It is east facing, and gets sun until about noon. I LOVE lilacs, but I'm afraid that even the smallest varieties won't do well in such a small space. People I have asked have suggested echinacea and daylillies, by I don't care for them. Are lilacs completely out of the question, and if so....any suggestions?
