WI/Milwaukee visit -- gardens -- etc??

I'm thinking of heading to Milwaukee in a few weeks for a much-needed respite from caregiving (my mom is in hospice and I'm her primary caregiver). What can I expect in terms of gardens/bloom season? Any place special to visit? Is there any place other than Milwaukee along the lake that I should be considering? I don't want to go too much further north (time issues, Milwaukee is already a 5 hour drive and I only have 5 days off). I do want to stay along Lake MI. I'm mainly looking for nice natural areas, gardens, and lots of peace and quiet. Thanks for any suggestions/guidance!

(Oh, also, I need to make reservations really soon, so quick replies are most helpful, but any suggestions between now and the 18th are welcome!)

Well, you're going to be driving right by the Chicago Botanic Garden - in the understatement of the day, that's worth a stop!!! You could spend 2 days exploring there but can also do a rather quick tour. If you go, don't miss the Japanese gardens if you're looking for serenity and mind clearing.

My son went to school at Marquette in Milwaukee but I never made it to the gardens when he was there. Their art museum on the lake, however is not to be missed.

You have a tough job being caregiver - good for you for taking a breather.

I would suggest Boerner Botanical Gardens in the southwest corner of Milwaukee county and Villa Terrace along the lakeshore. There are many bike paths along the lakeshore to be hiked as well.

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions! I have my hotel reservation; now I just have to poke around and see what I want to do!

Anyone know anything about the Polish Festival that's taking place the weekend of the 20th? Huge crowds? Fun?
