Late summer/early fall?

Posted by tamisue_2009 N. Illinois (My Page) on

I live in extreme northern IL, about 15 miles south of the WI state line. Summer is still days away, yet many of my late summer/early fall flowers are blooming! Purple coneflower, butterfly weeds, Autumn Joy sedum and goldenrod! Has anyone else noticed this in their gardens? And what's up with it?? Is it all the rain we've had along with the below average temps this spring? And isn't just one coneflower plant, or one sedum or butterfly weed. ALL of them. Weird.

I have all the plants you mentioned, except the bw, and none have blooms yet. Everything has been on schedule for me so far, even with the amazing amount of rain. Maybe you have some kind of micro-climate going on, putting you into a zone 6. I'm about 20 miles west of Chicago, so not too far from you.
