Crape Myrtles in Missouri (Zone 6a)?

Hello everyone! :) I would absolutely love to plant a ton of Crape Myrtle trees around my property, but I have read that zone 6a (St. Louis MO) is iffy :( I am not being picky about color or anything...I just would love to find a hardier CM tree that may do well in my area. I have read that they often die back to the ground after the winter...so if anyone knows of a very cold hardy CM tree that will not do this, please let me know :) Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

Hello,
I live in St. Louis and have had no problem growing Crepe Myrtles. I don't know the variety, but I purchased them at Lowe's. I don't cut them back to the ground either. They are the last plant that wakes up in the spring though. The big problem I have had with them is they are a magnet for japanese beetles. I have to keep them sprayed with liquid seven. Good Luck.

There are several varieties of crape myrtle for zone 6 and even a few for zone 5. Be cautious of lowe's as they almost always carry the zone 7 ones. Check the tags. If you have a harsh winter the zone 7 will die for sure.

Danielle - Did you have any luck finding Crape Myrtles for sell in St. Louis?

Around late November after we've had some freezes but it hasn't gotten terribly cold yet, mulch several inches deep around and up against the trunk. Leave the mulch there until spring. It's important to do that for at least the first couple winters while it's young. As Julesmom said, they are late to leaf out so don't dig one up in May thinking it's dead. Even if it doesn't start to regrow until June, it will still have time to bloom.

The trunks on mine don't die back here in SW Missouri and yours may not either especially as they get older so make sure you don't get a variety that gets bigger than you want.

Here's a good link. There a paragraph on hardiness that says "The USNA hybrids that have Lagerstroemia FAURIEI as a parent are hardier than Lagerstroemia indica cultivars".
Those hybrids would be less likely to die back for you.
Click on the link for the "Crape Myrtle Quick Guide Chart" close to the top to see descriptions. There's a poster on the same website that has color photos too.
