Poppies are early to mid-season bloomers. They prefer cooler temps.

Die-back is perfectly natural this time of year.

I always like to sprinkle the seeds amongst other types of plants. As the poppies die back, the other flowers' foliage grows over and hides the yucky yellow stuff. :)

This type of poppy is an annual which will re-seed if you don't yank it before the seedheads ripen.

my poppies have lasted a little longer than usual this year. they're still blooming and i'm fairly surprised. I intermix them with a wildflower mix and they look so pretty mixed in with the bachelor buttons, black eyed susans, and daisies - you don't see the die back that usually happens in july and the blooming keeps going with the other plants - plus by not cutting them back the poppies keep reseeding themselves - bonuses all around

Windy is that a new planting this year of annual seeds or is this a return of perennials? When was the picture taken? It's beautiful. I have an area where that sort of mix would be perfect. Did you mix the seeds yourself or buy it prepackaged?

I have a plot I devote entirely to wildflower mix. It's a combination of annual and perennial flowers. It's from a can (American Wilflower Company???) I purchased from Home Depot for around $9.00.

This is the third year I've planted this mix. In early April I scratch up the soil with a hard rake, sprinkle on the seed and water lightly everyday. The picture was taken at the end of June.

I suppose I could leave the plot alone and see which perennials return, but I just love the many annuals that come in the mix so I plant it every year.

So easy and so much fun to watch!
