Rose of Sharon pruning

Hello,

The first plant/tree/shrub I have ever transplanted took place about 3-4 weeks ago and is the subject of this message. :-)

Please take a look at the pictures. This is about 7" tall and is making it through the transplant process OK.

My questions are...

1. How do I prune this to make it more upright, to grow more like a tree rather than a shrub. I am looking to have the lower portion more bare and the top full.

2. In the picture there are what appears to be 3 main shoots. Do I need to trim off two of them? If so what is the best way? Do I dig the soil back a bit and trim right where they attach to the root?

Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Jeffrey
