When to Harvest Squash ?

We planted three butternut squash plants on or about June 1, 2007. We have a few squash now growing. When should we plan on harvesting them ? They are all a pale yellow currently. One is 6-8 inches in length. Others are smaller.

Butternuts can take as much as 3 months to ripen. The shell will turn the tan color you're used to seeing and it will also lose any "shine". So, unless you have an early variety look for dull tan squash sometime in Oct. Hope that helps. BTW, some feel that you should leave at least 3 inches of stem on the squash when you harvest. Just cut the stem rather than pull the squash off.
