Overgrown Tree

Hi Folks!

I've recently purchased my first home and am having way to much fun out in the garden! Expect to see me here in the future!

I would appreciate some advice on the following: I have a tree in my back yard that sits near my deck. It doesn't look as though it's ever been pruned and if filled with branches growing in criss cross patterns straight into each other. Whats more is there is basically two main trunks growing right next to each other (I'm guessing it's still one tree though).

The problem is it's providing way to much shade in a prime growing area at the base of my deck. My questions:

* What kind of tree is this?

* Will cutting down one of the trunks kill the tree?

* Is it safe to prune or greatly reduce it's size in late fall?

* Would you consider it blasphemous to remove the tree completely?

Here's a video and image of it's leafs

Any advice or opinions greatly appreciated!!!
