plant peas in winter?

| Have you ever tried to plant peas in winter for a spring crop? I go to Florida in the winter and get back too late to plant peas. I was thinking about trying to plant them around December 1 before we leave. Do you think they might rot? Has anyone tried this? |

| They might rot, even if treated with a fungicide; that's a long time to be in the ground. They also might start to germinate if you have a January (or Feb.) thaw and then it gets really cold again. I always planted my peas in IN around mid-late March -- I take it you aren't back by then -- know anyone who would trade an extra row of peas for some fresh citrus fruit? You might be able to work out a trade! |

I'm not thinking the seed would survive. But with a heavy snow cover.............. I'd certainly give it a try. Even if it only worked once every couple of years, it would still be cool. I still think its a long shot tho. |
