Elephant ears

Hi: I'm in Zone 5 west of Chicago. I've always waited until my elephant ears died back to the ground before I dig up the bulbs and stored them for the winter. This year I need to get them out so I can put some perrenials in that area. Problem is the elephant ear foliage is not showing signs of dying back yet. Will it hurt to take the bulbs out anyway?
I've had these bulbs for several years and don't want to lose them - we're like family. LOL

RE: Elephant ears

I dig mine before the frost gets to them...

Go ahead and dig them and lay them in the garage floor (on some newspaper) until the foliage dies down (the nutrients will move back down to the tuber)....then cut off the foliage and wrap them up....

No problems at all!
