Relocated to Zone 4/5 (?)near Rockford from Zone 8. I have always planted in the fall, in Zone 8, but it doesn't seem like it is a common practice, here in Northern Illinois....
I have planted Miscanthus, but would like to really load up on the autumn sales, but the neighbor says they will die!!
So...
*can I plant perennials (butterfly bush, daylily) in the fall?
*when to plant allium and other bulbs?
Thanks for any help!!

I make sure all my planting is done by Oct. 15. Not sure why that particular date, except that I've read it more than once regarding zone 5. I've never had luck, though, with planting anenomes in the fall...spring is better. bulbs can be planted into November as long as the ground isn't frozen.

Fall is a good time to plant perennials I've planted up to mid Oct. The bulbs you can plant as long as the ground isn't frozen. Don't forget to mulch the areas for some winter protection. I think you'll have to play around with what will grow here and over winter. Some Canna's will over winter if close to the foundation and have protection.
