Help - What's wrong with this shrub/bush?

Posted by tindee 6 (My Page) on

Hi - first off I should say that I don't really know what this shrub/bush is - and I definitely don't know what's been dining on the poor thing.

Any help out there? Is it definitely a critter or could it be pollution? I live in St. Louis, MO.

Thanx!!
Tina

Tina,
I don't have my tree/shrub book in front of me(Pirrone) - I keep it at the library. But I want to say that your shrub is a Purple Sand Cherry and the insect that chews the holes is a wasp. I treat trees and shrubs and do not really have control over this problem. I also see it on Newport Plum - similar tree. It really is more of a cosmetic problem and will not kill the shrub like the borers that it OFTEN gets. A similar shrub I recommend as a replacement for Sand Cherries is a Diablo Ninebark - so far NO insects or diseases. So I really wouldn't worry about it- your shrub should be fine.

It does look like a plum. The chewed leaves looks like Japanese Beetle damage to me.

That is a purple leaf sandcherry. (they are more green than purple this time of year) I have 6 of them, plus a Newport Plum tree. They all look like that at the end of every season, and whatever it is that is eating them, I have never been able to catch the critter in action. No worry though, they always come back beautifully in the spring.

Have you seen whitefly flying around? Shake the leaves and check close to see if little white bugs flutter around. I noticed my hydrangea had several families today while outside working. Toni

I am not sure what shrub it is, But on some of my bushes I see the same problem and I actually caught the culprits too --- Japananese beetles !!
