It's not a rose. Perhaps it's a Rubus .
In what area are these growing? ( state, growing zone)

This is in Tennessee - just outside of Nashville.

Black Raspberries are native and you often find them in the midwest. That's a very likely candidate considering the location.

It's a Blackberry, Rubus spp. Don't know which ones are common where you are, there are a bunch of them.

Looks like it has bloomy stems of Rubus occidentalis or a similar species, if there is more than one back there (here we have just one of this type, R. leucodermis).

The two raspberries around here (R occidentalis and idaeus) have mostly 3 leaflets, not five as in the picture. And the thorns aren't as big. Of course that's in NJ, I suspect Tennesee has some species we don't have up here.
