7 ft tall green stalks with red flowers at top

I saw a large clump of these growing in a garden along the side of the MS&E building on the UW-Madison campus but have no idea what they are called. They reach 7 to 8 feet in height and have large oval leaves, red flowers at the top, and dark brown, round, half inch diameter seeds in husks.
