I think this is erythrina abyssinica. The leaves look very similar to your picture.

I don't think that's 'Dr. Huey'. When I was in Buffalo, there were plenty of them around the neighborhood. I tried telling some of the neighbors that the roses they were coddling were just rootstock, but to little avail. Your rose has too many petals to be 'Dr. Huey', and if you say you notice fragrance, that's another clue that it's something else. Finally, I noticed that 'Dr. Huey' tends to have seven leaflets as its "full set" rather than five. Your rose looks to be a Hybrid Tea -- I'd guess something mid-20th Century or so. At first, it reminded me of 'Crimson Glory', but that could be just because I have it here. You say it is once-blooming -- that may simply be because it's struggling where it's planted. If you're leery of digging it up and planting it elsewhere, perhaps you could try rooting some cuttings and see how it does in a better location -- or a pot. :-) ~Christopher

I have found that the flowers are typically more of a rose pink than the brilliant red shown in many photos (a bit of photo enhancement perhaps?). They are biennial, blooming the second year, then declining--sometimes after first bloom, you can stretch them for one or two more years. They are relatively easy from seed.
