ID this flower

Hi folks. I've a neighbor who loves this particular flower that's growing in his yard:

He wants to know what it is. My strength is trees, not so much flowers and shrubs, so I've been unable to help. Can anyone out there identify this plant for us? Thanks in advance!

I assume this is growing around Durham, NC (based on the 27708 in your profile)? Does he know if this flower was planted or is growing in a natural (wild) area?

It looks like some type of orchid (not all of which are native). You might want to post this on the Name that Plant forum as well.

Identified on Name that Plant as Haemaria discolor, jewel orchid - not native to the US.

A few websites list it as fragrant. They're probably just referencing each other. I'll take this one from OSU: "listed both as fragrant and unscented". https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/jasminum-mesnyi I really do like most of the stinky jasmines.

It does look like calendula. Seeds, BTW, can spread far and wide by a number of different means, one of which is through animals &/or birds either ingesting and eliminating, or picking up and dropping. Sometimes seeds stick to an animal's body/fur/feathers and become dislodged later. Seeds can also be carried far and wide by water and wind. Even us humans can move seeds around if they stick to our shoes or clothing.
