Viola rivinia purpurea still marketed as native Viola labradorica

For many years (over 10 at least) the nursery trade has been selling and marketing Viola rivinia purpurea grp.(from Europe and Asia) as the NATIVE Viola labradorica purpurea. This misrepresentation is very slowly being corrected, but several seed/plant sources are STILL using the incorrect name, or saying that the names are synonymous. This gives the false impression that the plant being discussed is actually a North American native that goes by more than one name. NO! The plant commonly being grown in Canada and the USA is not the true V.labradorica, which (by the way) actually exists, but is a completely separate plant.

This plant ID is mainly important for those people trying to grow only native N.Amer. species in their gardens. I have a somewhat mixed garden myself. However I always like to know the true, correct name of all the native species that I grow, partly because I donate plants/seeds to our local wildflower society.
