Avoiding Spreading Invasive Beetles

I was trying to find sassafras, which it turns out is hard to find.

i found a place in Tennessee that sells small bare root Sassafras by mail order. I recently heard that Sassafras in parts of Tennessee are afflicted with the Ambrosia Beetle and Laurel Wilt disease. Should I worry about spreading the Ambrosia Beetle and Laurel Wilt disease to Massachusetts? Are there any precautions I should take?

Make sure the nursery you get your Sassafras saplings from has been inspected and certified free of plant pests and disease. Here on my property there are several mature Sassafras along with many young trees - I've never seen any insect infestation or disease among them. I find them to be nearly indestructible, a few years ago I tried to kill some saplings that were growing under telephone/electric lines - cut them down, applied Tordon herbicide to the fresh exposed trunks and they responded by producing twice as many suckers. When I sprayed those with brush killer it didn't phase them at all. I think I could hear them laughing at me when I sprayed Roundup on them. One summer an adult tree was storm damaged, and a good portion of the top was blown off. That was about ten years ago - it has now regrown and looks as good if not better than the other mature Sassafras on my property.
If you plant healthy stock I don't think it would attract the beetle if it isn't known to be in your area, but I'm not sure of that.

Jebfarm, thanks for the endorsement of the toughness of Sassafras!
Do you find them attractive? How do they handle wind?

Anyway, Sassafras is hard to find. I've found two sources of Sassafras, and according to the web the beetle is in the state of one of the two...the one that is cheaper by far.

My concern is that Ambrosia beetles will be in the tree I bought and will bring it to my state

The nursery *SAYS* they have been inspected and certified, but how can I verify this? Is there a website I can use to do this?

Lots of questions here, I won't answer them all but 1) cukes and squash are somewhat hardier than tomatoes. I typically put them out a week earlier than toms. They will take 45F without flinching while toms prefer 50F or more. 2) for SVB, aluminum foil or spraying the base of the plant are possible strategies. There should be only one generation so if you spray consistently (the base only) you may get them. Around here, typical times for SVB are June 25 to July 5. 3) cucumber beetles are earlier than that, and they will transmit diseases to the plants early on. I suggest that you spray the whole plant well until first bloom. From that point on, you will have to be happy with what you get. 4) showering the plants with compost tea helps with leaf disease.

Finding TF cultivars can be tough, and you probably won't find them at a big box store. Usually you need to go to a local seed seller, or the internet. Oliger seeds carries 3rd Millenium SRP. The Hogan Company carries Falcon IV. There are other sellers on the internet, but I would probably just use the 3rd Millenium if you want to go the TF route. The best time to seed is late summer/early fall. Now is a good time for MD. Seeds will germinate in the dark, but it will need sun to grow and mature enough to get through winter. You should keep an eye on those shady areas to see how much sun they are getting now. You can also buy a Suncalc, which is a meter you stick in the ground and it measures the amount of sun you receive in a 24 hour period. Fine fescues (creeping red, hard, sheep, chewings) will tolerate even more shade, although they do well in sunnier areas too. They have very fine needle like blades, and usually a lighter green color. They are noninvasive for the most part. Creeping red fescue spreads a bit, but it is very slow, and I wouldn't worry too much about taking over an established stand. Poa triv as you know will, as will poa supina.

Sadly, I'm reading this to get ideas for plants I CAN use in this zone/region/area. We are what my mom calls "high and dry". You dig and get 6" or less of acidic topsoil (thanks to all the oaks), then the rest of it below is sugar sand (or "blow sand"). We are about 2 miles inward of Lake Michigan, but still have way too much sand in a heavily forested area. The years-long established woodland areas have typical wintergreen (teaberry), wild blueberry, wild violets, some kind of resilient fern, some dry-loving moss, a small non-violet purple flower, and others I can't remember names. But around my mom's house (built about 6 years ago) has nothing but sand under 1" of any kind of topsoil. Maple seedling from the few trees she has seems to be the worst weed in my beds. She's struggled over time to grow any kind of lawn and is just now starting to succeed in her back yard. We haven't found ANY plant so far to be invasive besides crab grass and dandelions. Snow-on-the-mountain died after first year somehow. Vinca minor (creeping myrtle) has grown (a little) over the years, but been struggling down a north slope. Lily of the valley will work around her deck area, but spreading VERY slowly. I purposely planted a sweet autumn clematis (paniculata) just to see how invasive it can be. I doubt it will survive and/or thrive. We do have some native weed of sorts in patches in the lawn which resembles a green, creeping jenny but we leave it because it's better than just plain dirt or failing-looking, patchy grass and it stays low to the ground. Her buttercup is still very slow to spread in her part-sun back rose garden. Spread like 3' dia in several yrs. We have a place to fill with something low between the west house wall and fence that will fair well (with no watering) and/or deal with regular lawn mowings. Was looking at tansy. Just want something that didn't fly over spans to faraway beds. But I can't STAND any wild violets in my flower beds, though. I moved away from the stuff at old house. It consumed all but some roses and bulbs no matter what I did to get them out. Pulled and dug for days to no avail. Then left bed to nature... and how ugly it got! Brought a few plants with me to my mom's house and nabbing any and all violet sprouts I see popping up around them. I wanted to refresh this thread for this list anyways. Maybe I can get suggestions along the way... Otherwise, great read!

There are several species that are escaping home gardens and wreaking havoc with the natural ecosystems-give these baddies a wide berth. The link below is not a comprehensive list, doesn't include banana poka (passifolia tarminiana)for example. You can also go to www.hear.org for information about invasives. OK, now on to the fun stuff! I wish i had never planted...psittacorum in my garden. Looks terrible most of the time and is really hard to contain or eradicate. Congratulations on your new project! - Sassafras is a tough tree, mine get hit with direct winds out of the northwest and have made it through fairly well, except for the storm damage that I had mentioned above. It doesn't seem to shed branches or be messy in any way. The autumn color is good, the fruit attracts birds (I've seen Cedar Waxwings eating it) and it is a food source for a species of swallowtail butterfly if I remember correctly.
From what I have read about the Ambrosia Beetle, infestation is fairly obvious - holes and frass where they have bored into the trunk and branches. There is nothing wrong with asking for a copy of the nursery inspection report from where you decide to get your Sassafras - I would dig you up some young trees if it weren't for the fact that they make a very long taproot that makes transplanting the tree (from the wild) just about impossible.
Yes, I think it is a good looking tree, here is a shot of some of my mature trees that I took today after reading your last post.

Ed - here is a better picture (I like to take pictures) - this gives you a better scale next to my barn. These trees are easily 50' tall, and they do tend to sucker from the roots so there are usually multiple trees found growing together.
