Native Hazelnut Shrubs

I have some native hazelnut shrubs I need to move in spring. Any suggestions for any particular type of area in which to plant them (sun, shade, wet, dry, etc.)?

The ones across the street, that I am waiting for the state forestry to look at to determine that they are truely native or not, are on the East facing undergrowth at the edge of the woods. A fairly dry area.

I have been told that there are no longer any native hazelnuts in Missouri. I am hoping the experts are wrong.

I guess in the wild I see them mostly on slopes so that would seem to indicate that prefer drainage. Although they can tolerate some shade, more sun would help them perform better. Not all day blistering sun, though.

I have very good luck with Salvia greggii. They take a surprising amount of shade, tolerant to the dry soil and they bloom well. I've filled a lot of difficult spots using volunteer seedlings and rooted cuttings.

Embothrium brought up an interesting fact. If this species was brought west as early as 1854 it made me wonder about the history of your place. Who planted it and when? If it was me, I'd be interested to know if this is an old homestead that was abandoned. We have many abandoned homesteads and dying small towns here in Oklahoma and it always makes me wonder about the lives of the people when I see the irises still blooming in spring or a forsythia bush or a spirea. Its common to see such plants in small abandoned cemetery's which tells bits of the human story. Personally I don't believe all non-native plants should be deemed detrimental to the environment. Sometimes there is some interesting history in these plants which represent a rural way of life which is almost gone. Not to get into a political tangle but I am saddened by the current attitude of many people and their attempts to erase or rewrite history in America concerning statues and memorials being torn down along with promoting an attitude that "whites" are evil which is taking place in our universities. In other words, there are different trains of thought because there are usually many sides to every issue. Maybe it doesn't offer much to pollinators but still, its a lovely sight and the romantic in me wonders if it possibly represents a bit of history of your property about people long gone. If its not invasive, what it the actual harm? I suppose it depends on how much of a technical purist you are but I always keep in mind some things are good for the soul, like beauty.

Hi Eileen! Sure looks like it to me--Danny? Others? We have a couple near here, across the road from us. But I'll come by soon, anyway, just to see the new digs! And to get one of them, too! Or two! :) . Oh. I have the BEST book everyone. It's called, "Essential Native Trees and Shrubs for the Eastern United States." But we're not in the eastern native ecoregion. . . well, in NE OK, we could be considered a part of it, roughly speaking. Many of their shrubs and trees are also native here. Nonetheless, I had to actually do a lot of reading and research online before being able to confirm it. But if you're in eastern OK, this book could be very helpful to you, too. (Or if you're Danny in Arkansas! LOL) . What I love about it besides the comphrehensive profiles, is that it has charts showing the size of the shrub/tree in 5, 10, 15, 20 years or so. So helpful in knowing what to grow in our yards. Also, wasn't thinking of native plants I already have here--evening primrose, late boneset, echinacea, gaillardia, rudbeckia. . . probably many others. . . will add as we think of them. Oh, and as a side note. . . native shrubs are in nearly all respects, more beautiful than non-natives.

The OP may be confusing the Corylopsis/winter hazel with Oemleria cerasiformis or Indian plum/Osoberry. That is also budding out now in more rural, wooded locations and looks deceptively like the corylopsis from a distance. And it IS a native species.

Thanks. Some of the spots I had in mind are on slopes in partial sun/partial shade.
I hope Missouri still has the natives. I have family and heritage in (what was once rural) MO although I was born and raised in the northeast. My aunt in MO is in her 80's and still grows her own corn. I read somewhere that MO has a wide variety of ecosystems and climates. I gotta get out there again sometime.

If you're hoping for nuts, I think the more sun the better. Around here they form thickets under powerlines on well-drained soils. They also grow in woods, but I usually don't see many nuts on the ones in the woods.

There are plenty of native hazelnuts in Missouri, though perhaps not as many as there used to be. According to the Missouri Department of Conservation:

"American hazelnut, also called hazel or American filbert, is probably native to every county in Missouri."

I know that the USDA has hazelnuts listed in all of the counties in Missouri however when there was a meeting concerning a trail and what plants would be in the way the meeting was told that there were no wild hazelnuts known in Missouri. It is one of those published vs information given out.

My husband's uncle in southern Iowa was certain that he could find the plants on the land in his area and came up with none.
