Trees that still have yellow leaves in NH--need ID

HI everyone, I have been trying to ID trees in the area that still have their leaves (I am in the Monadnock region of NH), and they are not oaks. They are the only ones that still retain some of hteir leaves besides the oaks. I am a complete novice at tree identification. I will put a picture up tomorrow. But in the meantime, the trees are generally in the understory of the woods around here. The leaves are light brown, almost appearing yellow in the woods. They are oblong, pointed at the end. The teeth, single and sharp, occur only at the end of the veins which are parallel to each other. The side veins leave the central vein at a 45 degree angle.

Maybe it's an American Beech? Some kind of elm? I was hoping that they were Hackberries for butterfly larval hosting.

Thanks in advance!
