Looking to trade Allium triccoum for Apios americana

I am in hopes anyone having Groundnuts or Indian potato would be interested in an equal spring trade for my wild leeks. Willing to do pound for pound trade this spring. Thanks

Groundnuts are best planted in the fall. Not the springtime.

Groundnuts have a fair amount of genetic diversity. Planting groundnuts from another region may result in plants that are less vigorous than your native groundnuts.

Apios is easy to find. Just go to the nearest floodplain and look around. They often grow near willow trees or buttonbush. Roadsides are another favorite habitat.

Hi Karyn, I would like to trade for a ground nut tuber (or two if they're not certain to survive transplant.) Would you be interested in Freesia, or daffodil bulbs? I have also ordered spicebush seeds and beebalm seeds (but they haven't arrived yet). I think I have irises growing in my yard, also. (I just got the house and the irises haven't bloomed yet, so I'm not sure what type they are.) Also, I'm a relatively new gardener, so if you are interested at all, you might have to instruct me in how best to prepare the plants for transplant. (I know this is the plant trading forum, but I figure tubers are more like bulbs. Please let me know if I'm wrong in that assumption.)

Hello Karyn, do you still have any Apios americana? Where did you get them from originally? I'm trying to find this species because I think it would do very well in my area (southern BC by the coast), my backyard has a bit of full sun that I use for tomatoes, peppers, and corn mostly and lots of semi-shade that I think would suit groundnut just fine. I've read about the Louisiana State University domestication program that was running in the 1980s through '90s and as far as I can tell Oikos and Cultivariable may be the only businesses still raising the improved varieties created by that program. It would be heartbreaking to lose them for good.

Hey Houzz folks! An update on Apios! This year we have made our groundnuts available through our seed distributor Sow True Seed out of Asheville, NC. These are the Blackmon line from the LSU trials back in the 1980s and 90s. As we continue to develop an agriculture model for them, the price will continue to get better. This is a great perennial food that grows from Ontario to Florida and almost anywhere in the US. Great for homesteading and permaculture gardens. Great in containers. Beautiful miniature wisteria-like blooms. It’s a legume, so it fixes nitrogen as well. Native Americans shared this with great food with the pilgrims when their crops were failing and it helped them survive. If you’re a plant buff, you need this one in your garden.
