Do you want it to be evergreen or is deciduous ok? Bottlebrush buckeye can get quite wide - even Red buckeye is a very nice plant - they are deciduous. Sometimes dense twiggy plants provide cover even without leaves.

'Savannah' is a hybrid native holly (Foster #2 is another one) - both parents are native (I. opaca and I. cassine). But I guess that is considered a tree .... Ilex glabra is Inkberry - that is a shrub.

Illicium floridanum is a nice shrub - evergreen but droops if the temp is under 32 (comes back nicely when it warms up).

Another deciduous idea is Blueberry. Cultivars bred from the native highbush are available in stores in March/April. Great fall color.

Eastern redcedar is great, but that becomes a tree eventually.

If you get the non-dwarf form of Agarista populifolia, that makes a big bush. You can also buy dwarf forms of wax myrtle now.

deciduous is fine, twiggy/tangled is what I am looking for. I have about 220' to cover and planned on Agarista populifolia for some evergreen, - just haven't been able to find the non-dwarf. There is also mature cedar, pine and a young sweet bay. I'm hoping to find a slew of other specific plants, it's just the wax myrtle that didn't "blend". Blueberry is here naturally, yay!

Savannah is a good idea, a favorite holly of mine. I had opted for the weeping yaupon instead but it was close, but I have a ton of holly now. I'm holly compulsive.

I like the buckeye idea a lot, but does it not seed to death? That's the sole reason I have not planted it. It's beautiful in my opinion. That would look nice with wax myrtle, I can use a smaller Sweetshrub in spaces in front of them. 'Come on, help me rationalize here. I've been looking for an excuse to plant buckeye for awhile against my better judgment. That and sumac, which I have avoided, so feel free to talk me into sumac as well.

Buckeye, seed to death? Not that I know of. But then, I usually pick the buckeyes off mine, plant them in pots with protective screening (against the squirrels) and then give them away or donate them to GNPS plant sales. Still I haven't heard that about them being a problem. Red buckeyes are great for those early hummingbirds. Heck, I'll even give you one (or several) babies. If you make it to Buck Jones nursery in Woodstock, I'm not far.

Oh yes, sumac is great - especially the staghorn sumac. Now that suckers, of course, but perhaps less so in a non-garden situation (i.e., no extra irrigation). In fall it goes up in flames and all winter long you have those lovely clusters.

Yes, I remember now that you have blueberry. You could still add one or two for cross pollination.

I hope I am not mixing buckeye with buckthorn re: seeding in my head which may be the case. I've been so focused on foundation food/shelter plants and cleaning woods that more ornamental has gone on the "later" mental pile.

I did bring in some other blueberries for cross pollination. It was a love at first sight with the blueberries here. Of course I met it in fall and beautiful with so many colors on a single plant.

I have one sumac on my property but don't know what kind yet. It only got hacked out of the privet this fall and it really impressed me with the aaaammmmaaaazing color. No clusters, no suckers, but it's been stressed. Hopefully it's a "good" sumac as I want to keep that fall red. Love the tiger's eye sumac also, just haven't done enough research to decide if a barrier should be used.

I need to try Buck Jones. I've never been, but it's in a direction I never go. Maybe I can email/fax The List to see if they have anything I am looking for and make the trip. They probably do - not all my items are uncommon. I'd love some buckeye babies by the by, even if I purchase a tree for myself.

AND I should give some plants to the GNPS for their sale since some things growing here are over abundant. I should check their site to see what types of plants they would like.
