Replacing bulbs and bushes with native flowers

Sorry to start the season with so many questions (I posted one last night), but I was hoping you could help my third grade class with a project.....We have a native garden that we started last year. To say that I am a neophyte is an understatement, but I am motivated to learn. In one area of the school year, there is a garden bed with bushes and a TON of bulbs. I ordered some wildflower seeds and would like to replace the current vegetation with them. However, I don't know how to get rid of the bushes (too big to pull out...at least too big to pull out easily) and bulbs without using chemicals. I assume I can dig up the bulbs, though there are HUNDREDS. Any thoughts?
