Matelea decipiens - Oldfield Milkvine - climbing milkweed

Does anyone on this forum grow this native vine? If so, how do you grow out your seedlings? Is it a fast growing vine?

I have three seedlings of this plant and need advice on when to plant out and how much sunlight to provide. Do you grow your vines in dappled shade or provide more sun?

Mary,

First,this particular species is endangered in Illinois and Maryland. Since you are in AR I can safely assume you did not find it in the wild in either of these states. LOL

Second, here is some information on the species.
Zone 6-8
Mature Height is 6-10 feet.
Mature spread is 3-6 feet.
Blooms May-June.
Plant in full sun to part shade.
Water requirement: Medium
Maintenance requirement is Medium (I assume you may need to trim it back on occasion)

Tony, would your Sandvine sometimes be known as Honeyvine milkweed? If so, I grow that vine in a big pot on my deck. I did have it down in my garden area, but it gets the yellow aphids badly so I brought it up to the deck so I could frequently check if for the aphids. Now this little vine Does attrack mama Monarch. I can't recall seeing her nectaring on the tiny blooms but I've found Monarch eggs on the vines. Other little butterflies have been seen nectaring on the blooms and I just may have missed Mama Monarch. Sometimes the only indication I have that she has been by is when I come across her eggs. I hope you found the plants you where looking for. However, Monarch caterpillars apparently feed exclusively on species of Asclepias. Some sources claim that Asclepias curassavica is their favorite food source. Asclepias includes the native milkweed (A. syriaca) but none of the species I am familiar with are vines.

I have posted everywhere on this site LOL some are probably pretty sick of seeing my name and the words climbing milkweeds but I haven't given up just yet!! these vines are such a underused vine nature provided them just for all those butterflies!! SrBurk thanks for your reply and yes look these up there wonderful vines try the Matelea flavidula and the gonocarpa and things like this!! To Catlunatic I saw that too Matelea dicipiens but I wanted them out of someones actual garden I know its asking alot but to me it means more and the germination for me is usually alot better. do you have a picture of the white climbing one in your garden?
