How to identify multiflora roses

Hi,

I will likely be posting here a lot as we just moved to NC and now have a lot of mostly pine woods to manage, and this is all new to me.

My question for now is how do I identify multiflora roses? There are some roses by our creek, two different kinds, I think, but they are just starting to leaf out, so in another week or so I'll have a better idea.

I have looked at sites that show the roses, but I want to make sure I don't take out something native. Are there native roses that grow in open woods? This area has had some disturbance but not a lot, just a few trees removed at some point.

Thanks for any info. I want to get started on taking out what doesn't belong but am afraid I'll pull something out that should stay.

Thanks!

Jeanne

PS--if anyone is good at identifying what I think are ferns, I have posted on the moss board gallery seeking an ID.
