blakrab... don;t see what zone you are in. Aronias shouldn't have any problem receiving enough chilling in zone 7, may be marginal some years n zone 8 or 9. At least in the eastern US. I'd disregard one of the comments that say these plants are toxic. We are talking about chokeberries or Aronia melanocarpa (Photinia melanocarpa). Chokecherries are in another genus,Prunus and these are the ones with toxic cyanogenic glycosides. I wouldn;t want that misinformation to keep you from growing it. Just another reason to use scientific names and not common names. They are called aronias in the industry.

this is a very interesting thread. i am in NH and i guess i always assumed i had aralia spinosa. after reading all of the above information about elata, i compared my shrub to the information from Janet above. guess what? i DO have aralia spinosa! no doubt about it. everything above matches. A. spinosa has an "inflorescence with a distinct central axis," that is, one main stalk to the flower cluster (YES). With elata, "central axis of the inflorescence very short or lacking" and the inflorescence has 3-8 spreading secondary branches (NO). On spinosa leaves, the veins of the leaflets do not run to the teeth(YES); on elata, they do (NO). Spinosa leaflets have a definite petiole (YES, about 4" on mine), elata leaflets are sessile or nearly so (NO). thank you so much for posting this information so that i could confirm that it is the native variety. gerryld, if i recall, the branches do seem to all fall off over the winter. i never noticed the shrub until last year when it flowered and had outstanding berries. the birds went crazy. mine is also not really not suckering too much.

What's tasty is apparently a regional issue, also, so you might try checking your local (in my case, Maryland Cooperative Extension's Web site) extension service for a list of plants that are "deer candy" or avoided by deer in your area. I've had them nibble on Japanese white spiraea (Spiraea albiflora) and the usual tulip and hosta foliage. I'm not sure what sort of research you turned up on the winterberry, but it is not anything I'd grow for edible purposes. As noted above, holly berries, Ilex species, contain toxic alkaloids that, while not likely to produce any serious or potentially fatal outcomes, can certainly result in significant gastrointestinal distress. The only notably edible portion of the plant is the leaves, which can be used for a tea. There are only a few of those included on your original list that I would consider good for eating out of hand - the walnut, hazelnut, aronia, malus and amelanchier excepted. The rest require some sort of processing due to the fruit being unpalatable if eaten fresh or because the size and quality of the actual edible portion of the plant is so small on the individual fruit as to make it impractical for fresh eating.
