saving Lobellia cardinalis seed

I bought a packet of L. cardinalis seed. It's so tiny that, assuming even half of it sprouts and grows out, I'll have way more than I can plant this year.

Is it worth trying to save a little for next year?

And if so, how?

Would it make sense to press all the air out of the packet and keep it in the freezer until next spring?

Just keep in the fridge, not the freezer. Seeds will keep for a very long time, depending on species.
I've found this Lobelia likes to germinate at hot temps, ie, around 80 degrees or so.

L. cardinalis self-seeds easily so you may not even need to sow more. Also, you will discover that at the end of the growing season, there will be a clump of small plants forming at the base of each mature plant. You can separate these at the beginning of the new growing season and set them out independently

ok, you ladies have sold me on WS tomatoes. So I made a new lasagna bed today 36 inches wide x 50 feet long. I still got to add some more to it, I have it 18 inches high, but will finish tomorrow 24 inches deep! I only worked around 4 hours on it so far. But it already looks so "rich" that I bet I dream about them maters jumping out of it tonight! So Trudi_d, I am sending in my tomato request tomorrow. Cardinal flower was my first guess too. Karen, thanks for sharing the picture again. It is just beautiful. Did you save seeds from any of the coleus? I am overwintering some I had this year as an experiment, but I didn't get any of the dark burgundy ones, that would match my front door. You have a great eye for design, which I lack. I have to have my daughter help me, who knows nothing about plants, but has a designers eye. We're a great team! I brought in a Kong coleus and I think I will get some seeds from that, hopefully, if you would like to do a trade.

It's unlikely that a nylon would work anyway. They are finer than DUST, no word of a lie. :o/ I really can't think of any way that the seeds/dust could be collected if the pods were to open spontaneously. My Cardinal Flower plant (ya, I only have one little lonely one) is in the shade so it's still green but ones I've seen in sunny areas are now turning that brownish/yellow colour. I knocked on the door of someone I don't even know to ask them for some pods but unfortunately nobody answered. :o( I'll try again though because it takes a zillion of these dust specs to even appear visible in a tiny seed envelope. I'm afraid if I don't put in enough that people will think I'm ripping them off when I use CF seeds in trades. Bubble off plumb... you and I are very close geographically (relatively speaking) and we've had such wet, wet weather, I suppose it's hard for the seeds to ripen and the stalks to dry. The first year from seed, Lobelia cardinalis makes a little rosette of leaves. The 2nd year it puts on amazing growth and flowers nicely. It reseeds in my garden here and there quite a bit, and sometimes in odd places like the middle of the garden paths. I haven't had to start it from seed again, and usually have a few extra little plants to give away.

I keep all my seeds in the refrigerator - one of the produce drawers is dedicated just for seeds, which preserves their viability for a long time. It's worth saving some seed just in case - I also do seed offers on the Seed Exchange forum, and there are always gardeners who want this seed.
